Security

Today, we are somewhat worried. Almost everyone is anxious. We are living through many forms of insecurity in this modern age. There may be no shortage of people in the world who suffer from humanitarian, social, and even economic insecurity. Wars and conflicts continue to exist from country to country. In addition, terrorism at the national and international levels has kept everyone under constant threat. Is there any country, rich or poor, that is completely free from terrorism? Even the world’s richest and most powerful countries and individuals today live under the constant tension of sudden attacks by armed terrorists.

For a human child, the safest place is in the lap of its mother. As the child grows a little older, being able to hold its mother’s hand provides it with some sense of security. When a person becomes wealthy and financially secure, they require security forces for their protection. From childhood to old age, every human being wants protection and a secure life. This need for security does not exist only from birth until death. Today, security is required even before a child is born; that is, the safety of the child in its mother’s womb must also be ensured. Even after death, ensuring the security of the body in the grave is no less important today. Therefore, security is an extremely important fundamental human need. There is no doubt that its importance will continue to increase in the future.

The Role of Bangladesh’s Armed Forces in Ensuring National Security, Human Security, and Establishing International Peace

Introduction

National security is one of the fundamental foundations of a state’s sovereignty, independence, constitutional governance, public safety, and sustainable development. In the modern world, the concept of security is no longer limited to military defense; it also encompasses human security, cybersecurity, maritime security, disaster management, protection of critical infrastructure, and international cooperation.

The Bangladesh Armed Forces—the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, and Bangladesh Air Force—play an important role in strengthening national security while protecting the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity under the Constitution and prevailing laws.

1. Protection of National Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity

One of the primary responsibilities of the Armed Forces is to maintain the country’s defense capabilities to protect its independence, sovereignty, and border security. For this purpose, regular training, modernization, and preparedness are continuously maintained.

2. Land, Maritime, and Airspace Security

The three services of Bangladesh work in coordination to maintain preparedness for land-border defense. The Bangladesh Navy plays a role in protecting maritime boundaries and maritime interests. The Bangladesh Air Force develops capabilities for monitoring and defending the country’s airspace. Together, they ensure the surveillance and preparedness necessary for national security.

3. Maritime Security

The Bangladesh Navy plays an important role in protecting national interests in the Bay of Bengal. This includes assisting in maritime security, participating in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, coordinating with relevant organizations to protect maritime resources, and providing humanitarian assistance during maritime disasters.

4. Disaster Management and Human Security

Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country. During cyclones, floods, tidal surges, earthquakes, or fires, the Armed Forces conduct rescue operations and assist in moving affected people to safe locations. They also help deliver food, safe drinking water, and medical assistance and support the establishment of temporary shelters. These activities constitute an important part of ensuring human security.

5. Protection of Critical National Infrastructure

Under special circumstances and according to government directives, the Armed Forces can assist civilian authorities in ensuring the security of important installations and critical national infrastructure. Such assistance is carried out on the basis of law and government decisions.

6. Cybersecurity and Technological Capabilities

In the digital age, cybersecurity is an important component of national security. The Armed Forces are strengthening their capabilities in line with modern security systems through the development of information technology, communications, and cybersecurity capabilities.

7. International Peacekeeping

Bangladesh is one of the major contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping operations. Bangladeshi peacekeepers work to protect civilian populations, assist in establishing stability after conflicts, support human rights and humanitarian activities, and contribute to peacebuilding by developing trust among local communities.

8. Inter-Agency Coordination

During national emergencies, the Armed Forces coordinate and work with the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard, Fire Service, Directorate of Disaster Management, and other government agencies. Such coordinated initiatives strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to crises.

9. Professionalism and Public Trust

One of the major strengths of the Bangladesh Armed Forces is their discipline, professionalism, and ability to respond rapidly. Regular training, technological expertise, and humanitarian values have made them an important component of the national security system.

Bangladesh’s Position in the International Context

Through long-term participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, Bangladesh has established itself in the international arena as a responsible and professional peacekeeping country. The contributions of Bangladeshi personnel in humanitarian assistance, engineering capabilities, medical services, and community-based activities have received international recognition.

Future Actions

Continuous modernization of defense capabilities; increasing cybersecurity and technological security capabilities; greater use of advanced technologies in disaster management; further strengthening inter-agency coordination; increasing international training and experience-sharing; and further developing humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping capabilities.

Conclusion

The Bangladesh Armed Forces continue to make important contributions not only to protecting the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, but also to national security, disaster management, humanitarian assistance, and the establishment of international peace.

By performing their responsibilities under the Constitution, laws, and civilian authorities, and by combining professionalism, discipline, and humanitarian values, they constitute an essential component of the national security framework. In the future, through modern technology, skilled personnel, and international cooperation, the Bangladesh Armed Forces can continue to play an important role in building a secure, stable, and developed state.
